SOLの弦楽セクションといえばこれまでにも「弦楽のためのイギリス音楽」(RCHSA5264/CHSA5264)や「弦楽のための音楽」(RCHSA5291/CHSA5291)、「メタモルフォーゼン」(RCHSA5292/CHSA5292)などで度々弦楽アンサンブルのための作品にフォーカスし、きわめて質の高い演奏で絶対的な評価を獲得してきました。そんな彼らが今回取り上げるのはエネスク、イザイ、バツェヴィチというこだわりが光る濃密なプログラム。ヴァイオリニストとしても頂点を極めたエネスクの弦楽八重奏曲は、パリに渡りフォーレやマスネに作曲を学んだ後間もなく作曲された19歳の頃の作品。全4楽章、38分近い演奏時間を要する大作です。「夕べのハーモニー」はイザイの作品の中でも演奏機会が少ないレア作品であり要注目。代表作であるソナタなどとはまた一味違った、感動的な美を湛える隠れた名作です。ポーランドの女性作曲家として初めて国際的な名声を獲得したバツェヴィチの「弦楽オーケストラのための協奏曲」は戦後すぐに書かれた作品。1950年のポーランド国家賞を受賞しており彼女の代表作の一つに数えられます。これらの作品が持つ魅力を最大限に引き出すSOLの弦楽セクションの充実ぶりにご期待ください。

Few would call the Sinfonia of London and conductor John Wilson big names in that musically rich city, but for some time, cognoscenti (and more) have known to be alert for their original, superbly executed programming. An excellent example is this recording of a trio of works each, a generation apart from the previous one. They seem as diverse as can be, but they are linked by the presence of the French-Belgian tradition (all three composers were shaped by training in France) that, for several generations, provided a counterweight to the claims of the Second Viennese School and its successors. The Octet, Op. 7, of George Enescu, is heard here in a version for string orchestra approved by the composer. It is a gnarly work, approaching the dense scores that were soon to come from the young Arnold Schoenberg. Then there is the murky lyricism of Eugene Ysayes Harmonies du Soir, Op. 31, for the unusual combination of string quartet and orchestra, a rarely played work by Ysaye that does not exploit virtuoso violin elements. The Concerto for String Orchestra of Grażyna Bacewicz is sometimes called a neoclassical work, but its outer movements have an acid quality at odds with French neoclassicism, and its lovely, breathing slow movement is worth the price of admission here by itself. Containing much to savor on repeated hearings, even if the over-resonant church sound is not what any of the composers would have had in mind, this release made classical best-seller lists in the spring of 2024. ~ James Manheim
