1971年エストニア出身の指揮者ミケル・キュトソンはオペラ指揮者として定評が高いですが、2012年からニーダーライン交響楽団の指揮者を務めています。ニーダーライン交響楽団はマーラーの交響曲第3番を世界初演したクレーフェルト市立管弦楽団を前身とする団体。ドイツ風の重厚な音色が特徴です。

The music of Vasily Kalinnikov drew raves from both Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov, but Kalinnikov died of the dread tuberculosis at 35, and today, he is little known outside Russia. That makes this release from the Niederrheinische Sinfoniker under Mihkel Kutson quite valuable as an introduction to his music. The Symphony No. 1 in G minor, Kalinnikovs most popular work, is here, and the musicians turn in a deliciously ethereal performance of the big melody in the Andante second movement, arguably the most underrated tune in the Western classical repertory. Equally good are the short pieces that make up the bulk of Kalinnikovs output (he was just getting started as a symphonist). Kutson and the orchestra deliver the proper spritely tone in the Serenade for strings in G minor. Also noteworthy, and obscure even in Russia, is the tone poem Le Cedre et le Palmier, based on a poem by Heine about a love affair between a cold-climate tree and one from warmer southern lands; this sounds ridiculous, but the tale is so vividly rendered that one will forget that. MDGs sound treats the strings of the orchestra very well, and many listeners will want to hear the album just for the orchestra, a durable European institution that has not been recorded much. All these factors go far to explain why this release landed on classical best-seller lists in the summer of 2023. ~ James Manheim
