マーティン・ルーサー・キングと並ぶ黒人解放活動家マルコムX(1925-1965)の生涯を描いた異色のオペラ。因みに彼の生涯はスパイク・リーによって映画化もされている。オペラ化はこれが初めて。作曲者のアンソニー・デイヴィスは白人だが、マルコムXに深く共鳴して渾身のオペラに仕上げている。全体に無調の様式で書かれているが、ジャズ、ミニマルのスタイルも折衷されており、聴き手を飽きさせない。「中国のニクソン」や「ドクター・アトミック」など現代史をテーマにしたオペラを数多く手がけているジョン・アダムズがこのテーマでオペラを書いていたら、どうなっていただろうか。
