アンドルー・デイヴィス&BBC交響楽団の新録音は、故リチャード・ヒコックスより受け継いだ「英国音楽の伝道師」の名に相応しく、エルガーの大曲「ゲロンティアスの夢」!
併録されたコントラルトと管弦楽のための連作歌曲集「海の絵」では、ザ・シックスティーンやロリン・マゼール、キングズ・コンソート、ガブリエリ・コンソートなどと共演を重ねてきた世界的メゾ・ソプラノ、サラ・コノリーの歌声が響く。
また、チャールズ・マッケラスの「第九」やマイケル・ティルソン・トーマスの「大地の歌」、シアトル・オペラの「ニーベルングの指輪」などに独唱として参加してきたスチュアート・スケルトン、ウェールズ・ナショナル・オペラを中心に、数々のオペラ、オラトリオの独唱を務めたデイヴィッド・ソアーなど、「ゲロンティアスの夢」の歌手陣も豪華。

アンドルー・デイヴィスは2014年の4月には、エルガーの音楽への貢献が評価され、エルガー協会メダルを受賞。エルガー指揮者として自他ともに認められたばかりのデイヴィスが振るゲロンティアスの夢。長い間名盤として親しまれたリチャード・ヒコックス盤「ゲロンティアスの夢(CHAN241-46)」に続く、新たな名盤の誕生です。
