ロシアのクリスマスはユリウス暦で行なうため、1月7日となっています。ロシア正教のクリスマスのミサは、信者か親族にロシア人がいない限り経験は難しいですが、その音楽を1枚にした好アルバムが登場。ロシアがキリスト教化したのは988年にキエフ大公ウラジーミル一世が、東ローマ帝国皇帝の妹を妃にし、同国の国教である正教の洗礼を受けたことに始まり、今年2013年はその1025周年にあたります。それを記念してアメリカの有名な合唱指揮者クレイグ・ヘッラ・ジョンソンが、地元テキサス州オースチンの合唱団コンスピラーレと美しいアルバムを世に出しました。英語圏の人々が教会スラヴ語で歌うのも珍しく、不思議な魅力あふれる世界が現れました。
ロシア聖歌とは言え、作者はラフマニノフやイッポリトフ=イワノフ、スヴィリドフといったクラシック界で有名な人が多く、彼らの個性あふれる曲を楽しめます。合唱団コンスピラーレは1991年に結成されたグラミー賞受賞団体。ハルモニア・ムンディからはバーバーや「レクイエム」などの合唱曲集をリリース、注目されています。

Conspirare's 2014 release on Harmonia Mundi is a collection of sacred choral music in the Russian Orthodox tradition, drawn primarily from works by Sergey Rachmaninov, Alexander Kastalsky, and Alexander Gretchaninov, but including selections by Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov, Vladimir Martynov, and Pavel Tchesnokov, among other composers. All of these pieces reflect the "New Russian Choral School," the practice of liturgical music developed by the 19th century, which bore the influences of Polish, Italian, and German choral music of the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic eras, mixed with Slavic polyphony and the older Byzantine, Znamenny, and Demestvenny chants. The monumental harmonies of this music are chanted a cappella, and the richness of the textures is reinforced by the low notes of the basses, which give the sound a deep resonance and special warmth. Examples are given from the Matins service, the Liturgy of the Word, and the "sacred concertos" performed at Communion, so the different purposes for these chants are made clear, though listeners may find the intense expressions of reverence and joy to be most immediate. This 40-voice chamber choir was vibrantly recorded in St. Martin's Lutheran Church in Austin, Texas, and the responsive acoustics give the ensemble a glorious luster appropriate to the music.
