Culled from the group's early-to-mid-1950s material for the Prestige label, ARTISTRY presents the Modern Jazz Quartet honing its stately aesthetic while still acknowledging its bop roots. Many of the songs on this formidable 15-track collection are penned by MJQ's de facto leader, pianist John Lewis--most notably the swinging opener, "La Ronde," and "Django," a number that finds vibes player extraordinaire Milt "Bags" Jackson nodding to jazz-guitar legend Django Reinhardt with his intricate, deftly phrased lines. In addition to a few standards, including the breezy "In a Sentimental Mood" and the lively "Almost Like Being in Love," the ensemble also performs two tracks by Sonny Rollins ("The Stopper" and "No Moe") that feature the saxophonist himself adding considerable heft and energy to the tunes. Given the range of recording dates here ('52-'55), ARTISTRY touches on eras featuring both drummer Kenny Clarke and his equally capable replacement, Connie Kay, calling attention to the subtle differences between the two. As an introduction to the MJQ's revered Prestige sessions, this compilation is ideal.
