Contrary to its title, GREATEST HITS is NOT a best-of compilation (try the three-disc FAREWELLS AND FANTASIES or the complementary single-discs THERE BUT FOR FORTUNE and WAR IS OVER for that) but a somewhat controversial and downcast studio album of new material.
Featuring a cover photo of Ochs, formerly a topical leftist folksinger, in an Elvis-style gold lame suit, 1970's GREATEST HITS finds Ochs in a profoundly bitter frame of mind, ruminating over the price of fame in "Jim Dean of Indiana" and the question of artistic immortality in the savage "Bach, Beethoven, Mozart and Me." The overall tone of the album is such that it surprised few that Ochs never released another record, or that he committed suicide in 1974. However, Van Dyke Parks' characteristically layered production, featuring tasteful country-rock guitar solos by ex-Byrd Clarence White, is excellent and often beautiful. A discomforting but ultimately moving album.
