ホワイト・ストライプス/ラカンターズのジャック・ホワイトの新プロジェクト始動!そのホワイト・ストライプスの要であり、サイドバンドのラカンターズの司令塔であるジャック・ホワイトの新プロジェクトがこの"デッド・ウェザー"。08年にラカンターズがキルズとのツアーを行った際に、ジャックが喉を痛めるアクシデントに見舞われる。そこでキルズのボーカル、VIVI嬢ことモシャートにボーカルのサポートを依頼、ツアーも無事終了し親交を更に深めたモシャートとジャックの関係は、その後のデッド・ウェザー結成へと発展。"ただの一過性プロジェクト"と片付けるには、あまりにももったいない本気すぎる暴風雨サウンド!

'Horehound' is the debut album from Dead Weather - the alternative-rock supergroup comprising Jack White (White Stripes), Alison Mosshart (The Kills), Dean Fertita (Queens Of The Stone Age) and Jack Lawrence (The Raconteurs). With a wide range of talent at their disposal, the group deliver a thundering, raucous and swaggering record. Rock and blues influences are utilised in a distinctive and individual manner, with Mosshart's vocals being the standout feature of their sound. Includes the singles 'Hang You From The Heavens' and 'Treat Me Like Your Mother'.|

『Icky Thump』（2007年）以来、活動を休止しているホワイト・ストライプス。ワールド・ツアーがキャンセルされ、メグ・ホワイトの精神状態がよろしくないというウワサが流れたりして、バンドの行方には不穏な空気が漂っていた。でもそんな暗雲を蹴散らすように、ジャック・ホワイトはサイド・プロジェクト、ラカンターズの2作目『Consolers Of The Lonely』（2008年）を完成させてツアーに出動。有り余るクリエイティヴィティーを発散させていたわけだが、そのツアーで共演したキルズのヴォーカリスト＝ヴィヴィことアリソン・モシャートを誘って、今度は新ユニットを始めたのである。それがこのデッド・ウェザー。アリソンとジャック以外のメンバーは、ジャック“リトル”ローレンス（グリーンホーンズ〜ラカンターズ）とディーン・フェティータ（クイーンズ・オブ・ザ・ストーン・エイジ）だ。そして、意気投合した4人は勢い（＝初期衝動）に任せて、あっという間にファースト・アルバム『Horehound』を完成させた。ホワイト・ストライプスではミニマムな編成でラウドなロックンロールを、ラカンターズではルーツ・ミュージックに根差した滋味溢れるバンド・サウンドを展開してきたジャックが、デッド・ウェザーではドロドロにブルージーでネバネバにサイケデリックなサウンドを炸裂させている。また、アリソンの歌声もキルズの時よりもワイルドで淫ら。ストリッパーのポール・ダンスの如く肉食系ビッチの匂いを放っている。その熱い歌声にえげつなく絡むのがジャックのギターで、ラカンターズよりストライプスに近い爆発力を発揮して暴れまくりだ。そういえば、キルズもストライプスも男女2人組。バンド不倫ともいえるジャック&アリソン・カップルの掛け合いはどこか背徳めいていて、ストライプスの緊張感とは違ったダークな情念がアルバムに渦巻いていたり……。本作のツアー後、ストライプスはついに新作のレコーディングに入るそうだが、肝心のメグはギタリストのジャクソン・スミス（パティ・スミスの息子）と再婚したばかり。果たして、デッド・ウェザーが今後のストライプスに与える影響はいかに?　いろんな意味で波乱に満ちた本作は、血の色に染まったロックンロールがドシャ降りだ。
