The credits of this 1976 release are like a roll call of late '70s fusion luminaries: Lee Ritenour on guitar, future pop star Patrice Rushen on electric piano and synthesizer, Charles Meeks on electric bass and Billy Cobham on drums. Uncharacteristically, the sessions also feature a nine-piece horn section playing behind Rollins' tenor sax. Rollins' playing is typically impressive, and less conservative than the backing musicians and song titles might suggest; the last chorus of "Island Lady" features some Rashaan Roland Kirk-like blowing, and he gets downright fierce on Rushen's funk-influenced "Shout It Out." His impassioned performance on George Duke's "The Way I Feel About You" makes this by far the best rendition of the fusion standard. Don't let the '70s cliches of the title and cover photo fool you.
