1948年12月3日生まれ、英・バーミンガム出身のミュージシャン。本名はジョン・ミッチェル・オズボーン。70年にブラック・サバスのヴォーカリストとしてアルバム『黒い安息日』でデビュー。次作『パラノイド』で全英1位を獲得して一世を風靡。78年のブラック・サバス脱退後は、80年の『ブリザード・オブ・オズ～血塗られた英雄伝説』、翌年の『ダイアリー・オブ・ア・マッドマン』でソロとしても成功。
ヘヴィメタル界の“帝王”として不動の地位を確立。奇抜な言動と王道メタル・サウンドでカリスマ的人気を博し、ヘヴィロックの祭典〈オズフェスト〉を主宰するなどシーンを牽引。2020年の『オーディナリー・マン』までソロ・アルバム12枚を発表。
