Liner Note Author: Rob Hughes . The Platters had splintered into several different groups operating under the same name by the mid-'60s, with former members Paul Robi, Herb Reed, Tony Williams, and Edward "Sonny" Turner all leading versions of the Platters, with a rumored 120 different touring outfits using the name into the next decade. Sonny Turner's incarnation of the Platters signed with Musicor Records in 1966, and released several singles over the next three years, the period covered by this compilation, scoring minor hits with two Luther Dixon songs, "I Love You a Thousand Times" and "With This Ring," and another with "Washed Ashore," written by Tony Hester. Turner's version of the Platters bears little resemblance to the group's classic 1950s MOR style, opting instead for a sort of uptown R&B approach that was well suited to Turner's soulful vocal skills. Nothing here will make you forget Otis Redding, but these are solid tracks, and the Turner-led Platters are certainly worth a listen. This anthology of the Musicor years beats a similar release from the Collectables label by a good ten songs. ~ Steve Leggett
