In 2003, the maverick pianist Borah Bergman released the showcase solo set, MEDITATIONS FOR PIANO, on John Zorn's Tzadik label. Purely as an experiment, producer Zorn had suggested that the usually volatile pianist try toning down his aggressive, even angry, ambidextrous style just this once. The result was a searching set of mournful yet accessible Jewish-mystical improvisations, deceptively static but with a rippling, churning energy all its own. It's not stretching the metaphor to say that the Job-like Borah Bergman at last submitted himself to a higher power and reaped the greater wisdom on these MEDITATIONS.
