It sounds like a whole orchestra masterfully interpreting compositions of ambient fusion but really it's drummer Alex Cline, violinist Jeff Gauthier, and guitarist G.E. Stinson improvising. Things can get soft as a whisper--enough to chant a baby right to sleep--on "Nothing to Teach," or cruise recklessly through uncharted ground at top speeds (without a single accident) on "Driving to Iceland." That baby probably still wouldn't wake up though, as these three never grate the nerves with dissonance. No matter how far out their musical mind meld takes them, the listener is always right there in the front seat, gasping at the hallucinatory vistas. Gauthier's violin can sound like a whole horn section, vocals, or distant winds as needed, while Stinson's guitar screams like some yet unnamed bird flying backwards through time, and Cline's dizzying array of drums and patterns manages to propel it all into a mad and endless space. By the time the session ends with "Gigantic Human Frame" listeners may feel that they are being chauffeured by a pterodactyl over fusion-drenched, free-form molten consciousness. For anyone looking to expand their musical horizons without getting lost in an avant-garde fog, they may feel safe placing their trust in these wizened, all-knowing guides.
