Considering the unprecedented success of white hip-hop artist Eminem, it was only a matter of time: with HATCHET WARRIOR, ABK officially stakes his claim as the first Native American gangsta rapper to garner national attention. A close associate of the Insane Clown Posse, ABK (also known as Anybody Killa) mines a similarly humorous, experimental, and underground (but much more hip-hop oriented) style. In addition to the G-funk keyboards, hard-funk booty-shaking beats, and hard rock-flavored production favored by many of his Detroit-area contemporaries, ABK and his producer Mike P use plenty of atypical samples, including movie dialogue clips and tribal chants and drums. Anybody Killa's lisping rap style is aggressive, punchy, and technically accomplished, sounding like a combination of Freeway, B-Real from Cypress Hill, and Mike Tyson after a particularly rousing bout of ear-chomping. Lyrically, he's highly creative, eschewing the usual "I'll bust a cap with my nine," cliches for hilariously dramatic rants interspersed with super-catchy LICENSED TO ILL-era Beastie Boys-style choruses.
