Combining the enduring popularity of the songs from Disney movies with the current craze for bluegrass and old-timey music, O Mickey, Where Art Thou? presents Disney standards as performed by country and bluegrass performers. Not surprisingly for such a high-concept album, the results are something of a mixed bag; the dueling-banjos rendition of "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" is inspired, as is the similar treatment given to "Mickey Mouse Club March/The Ballad of Davy Crocket." Elizabeth Cook's "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah," Robbie Fulks' "When I See an Elephant Fly," and Stonewall Jackson's "The Bare Necessities" have fun with the clever wordplay in the songs and sound natural performed in the old-timey style; likewise, Collin Raye's "Circle of Life," Charlie Louvin's "I Will Go Sailing No More," and Ronnie Milsap's "When You Wish Upon a Star" also work especially well. The songs that aren't as successful certainly aren't bad, but don't really gain as much from their makeovers as the rest of the album. In particular, ballads like "Baby Mine" and "When She Loved Me" suffer the most from the slightly over-produced sound that keeps the album from sounding genuinely old-timey. Still, O Mickey, Where Art Thou? is a creative and entertaining album that should please both parents and kids. ~ Heather Phares
