Superdrag ploughs a self-deprecating furrow to the maximum on its third full-length album. The Knoxville, Tennessee-based quartet is bitter, and it shows throughout the cleverly titled IN THE VALLEY OF DYING STARS. After two releases with Elektra Records and a momentary glimpse of popular music fame courtesy of the 1996 hit single "Sucked Out" Superdrag's ride came to an abrupt stop. But rather than vanish, Superdrag returned to the ranks of the indies with renewed determination.
IN THE VALLEY OF DYING STARS is not a huge departure from the standard Superdrag sound--straightforward guitar rock with catchy pop hooks. The album follows the band's previous power pop formula, yet still sounds fresh. The lead track "Keep it Close to Me" is vintage Superdrag, complete with gnarly guitars, ascending and descending passages, and raspy vocals provided by lead singer John Davis. The remainder offers handfuls of modern rock gems such as "Lighting the Way" and "Baby's Waiting", which provide a nice contrast to more ballad-oriented tunes like "Ambulance Driver" and "The Warmth of the Tomb". IN THE VALLEY is a solid addition to the band's growing catalogue.|
