Recording information: Gracielands. Although the Fall has consistently released albums since the late 1970s, even its notoriously disagreeable frontman Mark E. Smith would probably admit that not all of them sit on the same plateau of excellence. THE REAL NEW FALL LP, though, is clearly upper-tier Fall, with Smith in fine snarling form, backed energetically by his recruits of the moment. On this 2004 release, the British post-punks kick things off with the razor-sharp guitar lines and shuffling beats of "Green Eyed." "Mountain" is an absurdist ode to Iggy Pop's "The Passenger," with Smith singing about receiving notes from fish, and other oddities, over a lumbering, ominous musical backing, while "Sparta" charges ahead as a revved-up sing-along. Once again proving that he's willing to take the Fall down almost any musical alley, Smith whispers gently on the quasi-folk-rock tune "Janet Vs. Johnny," and later channels his voice through sinister distortion on the appropriately named "Mad Mock Goth." Dynamic and intense, THE REAL NEW FALL LP exemplifies the best aspects of this revered UK band.
