"Doo wop is for dancin'" states the title of this five-disc, 104-track set, which in this case, doesn't mean the slow stuff. The doo wop genre is known for its love struck ballads, of course, and because of that it's easy to forget that doo wop is actually a gussied-up version of good old R&B, and vocal groups from the era had no trouble putting the foot hard to the gas pedal to get the dancefloors jumping. Track after track here bursts with nervous energy as if everything had been recorded after a five alarm coffee day. Among the highlights as they race by are the Magnificents' "Up on the Mountain," the Cobras' "La La," the Dells' "Time Makes You Change," the Students' "Everyday of the Week," the Court Jesters' wacky "Roaches," and "Rubber Biscuit" by the Chips, the original version of a song that was given new life (and a new audience) when it was covered by the Blues Brothers. Don't expect to be dancing cheek to cheek with any of these discs in the player. Instead, get ready to knock over some furniture. ~ Steve Leggett
