Despite being established as a spinoff imprint to the Trouble on Vinyl label and intended as an outlet for the synth-oriented side of drum'n'bass, Renegade Recordings never quite had the impetus to break out from under the umbrella organization and entertain the level of success enjoyed by the ubiquitous heavyweight of the genre -- Good Looking. As much tougher music came to dominate the movement through 1997 and beyond, with sister imprint Hardware at the forefront of this style, so Renegade lost further momentum. The resurgence of the atmospheric side through the efforts of labels such as Defunked, Hospital, and a slew of smaller imprints, however, reinvigorated the subgenre, with this album a rip-roaring 20-track tear-out, mixed by up and coming producers Ben Payne and Joe Willis. New signings Mathematics, Tronik 100, Artificial Intelligence, and Payne and Willis' own Insiders project jostle for space among the more established names of Solid State, Friction, and Simon "Bassline" Smith. It is relative newcomer D Kay who steals the show, however, with the sun-drenched acoustic guitar that graces his otherwise "Quiet Earth." ~ Kingsley Marshall|
