This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Contains fifteen untitled hidden tracks following "Re-Akshon Remix". Personnel: Killer Mike, Big Boi, Bizarre, J-Sweet, Slimm Calhoun, Rock D, Fass Black, T.I., Bun B, Bone Crusher (rap vocals); Dan "Thunda Dan" Marshal (guitar); Horns Unlimited (horns); The Beat Bullies (keyboards); Debra Killings (bass); Chris Saleh (drums). Producers include: Antwan Patton, Andre Benjamin, Killer Mike, Swiffman, Mr. DJ. As his debut kicks off, Killer Mike boasts "I'm a new breed of species/accursed to lips that speak my name/I'm different, twisted/my mind is not the same," a claim backed up by the subsequent tracks on MONSTER, which make it clear how Mike caught the eye of Outkast. Killer Mike made a high-profile debut with his blistering turn on Outkast's 2002 crossover hit "The Whole World," easily the most memorable guest spot of the year. It was hard not to be enraptured by his forceful, distinctive flow and insistent, slightly off-the-beat rapping style as he not only held his own, but almost stole the show from rap's most prominent innovators at the time. On MONSTER, Killer Mike's distinctively twisted mind goes off in millions of directions. Yes, there's the usual brash, arrogant assertions of the title track and the sweaty ode to the lust on "A.D.I.D.A.S.," but they boast unusually self-aware and thoughtful lyrics that could hold their own with the likes of Nas. MONSTER's high point may be "Scared Straight," an inmate's story as unflinching as the legendary documentary with which it shares its name. While Mike's from the Dirty South, he's not a typical representative of that sound. In fact, he's not typical in anything, which is what makes MONSTER so appealing.

After appearances with OutKast and Slimm Calhoun, Killer Mike made his debut with a tight record boasting a few chart-worthy singles as well as his twisted take on Southern bounce. He keeps his friends close to him, recording at OutKast's Stankonia studios, hiring Dre for a few productions, and inviting Big Boi to rap over his irresistible hit single, "A.D.I.D.A.S." Calhoun also stops by for a sarcastic "Home of the Brave," but elsewhere Killer Mike comes across not as an urban player or a Southern baller, but as every parent's worst nightmare, a Dirty South freak show gone horribly wrong. The title track is Southern rap gone horrorcore, while "Creep Show" features a suitable guest, D-12's Bizarre. Andre 3000's productions on "U Know I Love U" and "Akshon (Yeah!)" are perfect matches for Killer Mike's unhinged delivery. A few weak tracks bring it down somewhat, but Monster has several tracks that rise up to the level of an OutKast LP. ~ John Bush
