Jackson Browne's early career was inextricably linked to the singer-songwriter movement of the 70s, and Late For The Sky has proved to be one of the era's strongest and most enduring albums. Browne's reflective songwriting style attained a new level of maturity on songs such as 'Fountain Of Sorrow' and 'For A Dancer', the latter a strikingly literate meditation on death. Late For The Sky is overshadowed by the title track and 'Before The Deluge', two brooding songs of personal and social apocalypse that book-end the album and serve as a textbook definition of the Californian mindset of the 70s.

Late For The Sky｜CDアルバム
すべての楽曲が完璧だ。”傑作””名盤”といった評価に偽りはない。本物だ。
個人的には「悲しみの泉」を推したい。理由は、シンプルに”好きな曲”だから。
昔、深夜のＦＭ番組でこの曲とアラン・パーソンズの「願い」がよく流れていた。”よく”といっても２～３回程度だったと思うが、一期一会的な選曲のプログラムにしては異例だと想ったし、何よりも自分の心に刺さった楽曲だったので、そんなふうに記憶しているのだろう。
歌詞を十分理解しないまま聴いているが、特に惹かれるのは、たぶん恋人（ように想っている人？）の無邪気な笑顔の瞳に写る"悲しみ"を捉えた”写真”の件＜くだり＞と、“悲しみが泉のように湧き出てくる”という歌詞から浮かんでくる情景だ。だが、決して”悲しみ”を切り取っただけの歌ではない。ラストの”But you go on smiling so clear and so bright”というフレーズには、“救い”と”希望”を感じることができる。辛く悲しい時にそっと背中を押してくれる、”共感”というよりも”共鳴”できる楽曲だ。

レイト・フォー・ザ・スカイ｜CDアルバム
ジャクソン・ブラウンの音楽に初めて出会ったのがこのアルバムでした。「レイト・フォー・ザ・スカイ」での、あの伸びやかな歌声は本当に美しい。聴けば聴くほど味わいを増すような、大名盤ですね。

今更お薦めするのがお恥ずかしいウエストコーストロックの頂点に君臨する地球を代表する一枚。散々これも言われていますが、デヴィッドリンドレーのスライドが全編で歌に寄り添い恍惚の時が訪れる。名作過ぎて①を筆頭に意外と推し曲が人によって分かれる本作、私は④「レイトショー」が一番好きかな。ジャクソンブラウンは言葉詰め込んでリリカルに歌う瞬間がありますよね。ジャマイカセイユーウィルとか。あの瞬間にやられる！
