I'M JIMMY REED, which appeared at the tail end of the 1950s, was the blues icon's first full-length album, but he had already been releasing titanic singles at a pretty steady clip for a number of years before that. So while this isn't exactly a greatest-hits album (especially since some of Reed's finest moments were still to come at the time), it still winds up functioning as something of an anthology of his `50s recordings, including the milestone "Ain't That Lovin' You Baby," the R&B ballad "Honest I Do" (sporting a 6/8 meter that was unusual for the shuffle king), and much more. For a more comprehensive summary of Reed's big singles, you'd need an actual best-of package, but I'M JIMMY REED still makes an excellent entry point into the man's work.
