n the 21st century, club-oriented electronica is being combined with an incredibly wide variety of world music. Electronica and world music are umbrella terms that cover a lot of ground -- electronica is everything from techno to trance to jungle/drum'n'bass, while world music can be anything from Irish-Celtic jigs and reels to Algerian rai to Afro-Cuban salsa bands. Thus, world/electronica fusion has numerous possibilities. The main focus of Sister Bossa, Vol. 4: Cool Jazzy Cuts With a Brazilian Flavour is Brazilian/electronica blends, which are hardly unique to this compilation -- plenty of other releases (some in Europe, some in Latin American, some in the U.S.) have had a Brazilian/club/electronica focus. However, this disc is among the more solid ones. The title is accurate because the material does, in fact, tend to be cool (as in laid-back or relaxed) and jazzy. Of course, being jazzy isn't the same as actually being jazz -- Anita Baker and Sade are jazzy R&B/pop singers, but they aren't jazz. And the tunes on this CD aren't Brazilian jazz, although one does hear some jazz influence on club-friendly items like Freetempo's "Incidental Montage," Zeb's "Magnifica," Monsieur Blumemberg's "Bossa Con Alfanno," and Dirty Worx's "Ipanema Girl" (not to be confused with the Antonio Carlos Jobim standard "The Girl From Ipanema"). Sister Bossa, Vol. 4 doesn't get into techno or other forms of harsh, abrasive rave music; this compilation tends to favor the softer, more melodic side of electronica (which isn't to say that the selections aren't rhythmic, lively, and danceable). These days, so many world/electronica discs are flooding the market that it's hard to know where to look for quality; thankfully, Sister Bossa, Vol. 4 is among the more substantial Brazilian/club/electronica compilations. ~ Alex Henderson
