With tongues planted firmly in cheek, Southern California's Home Grown stake their claim to you-know-which-neo-punk-trio's throne with their third full-length album and debut for the hugely popular Drive-Thru Records. KINGS OF POP is riddled with rapid-fire pop-punk riffs in the tradition of scene stalwarts Green Day and Blink 182, but isn't afraid to show a melancholic side when it comes to lyrics. "I Love You, Not" and "I?ll Never Fall In Love" provide routes for angst-filled youth to get their everyday aggressions out in a positive way.
One can?t help but maintain a hopeful attitude while singing along to the sunny, harmony-filled choruses of "Cannot Stop the World" or "Second Best", but the edgy guitars set against soaring vocals on "Kiss Me Diss Me" remain the band's calling card. Setting aside their ska roots, the trio moves forward skilfully on KINGS OF POP, blending the musical worlds of power-pop, punk and emo.|
