Throughout his career, Joe Jackson has consistently defied convention. In the '80s, he forsook the straight-and-narrow path of "new wave" commercial success to release albums of jump blues and orchestral music, and he's kept his audience on its toes ever since. Even on this 2000 sequel to his popular 1982 album NIGHT AND DAY, Jackson tweaks expectations. While NIGHT AND DAY II shares with its predecessor a New York City theme and some Latin rhythms, it's more of a leap forward than a look back.
The album builds on the pop-classical blend Jackson explored on NIGHT MUSIC and HEAVEN AND HELL, adding a contemporary electronica flavor to the mix with subtly skittering programmed beats. Most of the band from the '82 album returns, their contributions carefully mixed in with Jackson's dominating keyboard work. A trick that served Jackson well in the '90s--bringing in guest singers (most notably Marianne Faithful) to "play" some of the characters on the album--is reprised here. In the end, this album bears only a nominal resemblance to the original NIGHT AND DAY, and Jackson's to be commended for forging ahead even when ostensibly revisiting past triumphs.
