EPM's New Orleans in New Orleans focuses on old-styled jazz recordings from the 1920s which were actually made in that city rather than Chicago or some other northern metropolis. That approach automatically calls up a finite circle of participants, for not every New Orleans jazz band managed to make records on its home turf. In addition to Sam Morgan, Tony Parenti, Tony Papalia, Armand J. Piron, and Albert Brunies, there are welcome appearances by steamboat bandleader Fate Marable and one-armed trumpeter Joseph Mannone, better known as Wingy Manone. This useful and entertaining mini-archive of classic traditional jazz is perfectly complimented by the Pearl/Topaz Jazz compilation Jazz New Orleans Style, which is almost exactly contemporaneous with this release. Although the two anthologies have ten bands in common, only two titles are duplicated. Owning both albums may generate pleasure and an improved awareness of early jazz music.
