When it comes to describing the music of nuevo flamenco artists Ojos de Brujo, it's best not to think of hip-hop, funk, rap, or rhumba newly melded with traditional flamenco music, but in terms of layers. There's the oral culture of the Roma people, rural accents of those who hid in the southern hills of Andalusia, and Afro-Caribbean rhythms learned by those who fled to the colonies, as expressed by vocalist Marina Abad and drummer Xavi Turull. Next are the elemental flamenco grooves laid down by guitarist Ramon Giménez. On top is an urban landscape precisely rendered by Abad's socially conscious staccato rapping. Listeners who are as interested in where flamenco has been as where it's going will love exploring the sonorous depths of Ojos de Brujo's Barí. ~ Jenny Gage|
