Personnel: Jimi Hendrix (vocals, guitar); Curtis Knight (vocals, guitar); Ed Chalpin (recorder). Recording information: George's Club 20, Hackensack, NJ (1965). Like most rock artists of the '60s, Jimi Hendrix certainly enjoyed indulging in a cover song or two. In fact, some of his best known tracks are cover tunes ("Hey Joe," "All Along the Watchtower," etc.). 2005's Drivin' South focuses on a pre-Experience Jimi Hendrix playing nothing but cover tunes on-stage -- most of which he would not revisit with his subsequent bands. Included are such blues standards as Bo Diddley's "I'm a Man" and Jimmy Reed's "Baby, What You Want Me to Do," as well as Ray Charles' "What'd I Say." But there are also a few tracks that Jimi would get a chance to return to, the best known being "Killing Floor" (which the Jimi Hendrix Experience would use to open their first ever gig on U.S. soil -- the fabled Monterey Pop Festival in 1967), as well as "Drivin' South" and "Bleeding Heart." While not the most captivating Hendrix release out there, it does provide an interesting glimpse into which artists influenced one of rock's all-time greats. ~ Greg Prato
