Best known for coining the term "concept art" in the early `60s, artist/musician Henry Flynt found spiritual kinship with the down home sounds of country blues and folk, as well as the rarefied world of New York's artistic avant-garde. Part of Locust Records' comprehensive exhumation of Flynt's hard-to-find `60s and `70s works, BACK PORCH HILLBILLY BLUES VOL. 2 sounds like an alternate-reality take on Harry Smith's seminal volume of ethnomusicology, ANTHOLOGY OF AMERICAN FOLK MUSIC. Combining distinctively Appalachian-influenced amplified fiddle play with the hypnotic, overtone dissonance of minimalist composers such as LaMonte Young and Tony Conrad, Flynt scuttles through a set of modal country jams that buzz and howl with the spirit of an electrified hootenanny.
