An excellent overview of the prime period of banjo player Gus Cannon's recordings with guitarist Ashley Thompson and singer Noah Lewis, Legendary 1928-30 Recordings isn't as exhaustive as previous collections on Shanachie and Document, which makes it more useful for the casual listener who might want to do no more than hear the original recording of the 1928 classic "Walk Right In," later a huge folk-pop hit for the Rooftop Singers during the early '60s folk revival. (Cannon's original is much more rhythmically loose, driven by his own kinetic banjo playing instead of the walking bass runs of the pop hit, with a sly, almost salacious wink in Lewis' vocals.) Thing is, the other 25 tracks on this album are so thoroughly appealing in their pre-Depression simplicity that anyone at all inclined towards early country blues will immediately want to go out and pick up the complete recordings as soon as possible. ~ Stewart Mason
