This is the third volume of the compilation series WHEN SHAPES JOIN TOGETHER. Well known for exposing rising talent in the electronica world, the Tru Thoughts label does it again here by including up-and-comers Natural-Self, Unitone, Mangataot, and others. Better known names like Bonobo and Jon Kennedy appear as well. Personnel: Richard Gibbs (drums). There are a lot -- too many to count, in fact -- of compilations and label samplers out there that all claim to have an impressive selection of music that will change listeners' ideas about electronica, few of which actually do anything but facilitate boredom and showcase the distance and coldness that often inhabit that kind of music. Fortunately, there are some welcome exceptions to this rule, one of them being British label Tru Thoughts. Thanks to its impressive roster (both Quantic and Bonobo have been on it for a while) and a keen ear, it continues to release consistently impressive and interesting compilations, one of them being the third in the When Shapes Join Together series. Vol. 3 introduces the Limp Twins, Natural-Self, Mangataot, Capoeira Twins, and Treva Whateva to the world of Tru Thoughts CDs (there had already been a few previous appearances on vinyl), creating an album that is not only exciting and interesting for electronica music lovers but also for those who wish to explore the genre but are turned off by what is often heard on other compilations. Because if When Shapes Join Together doesn't do the trick, it's doubtful that anything will. ~ Marisa Brown
