In jazz, the drums are part of the second line, the horns being the front line, and usually the main thrust of the music. However, over the course of the 20th century, drummers have worked tirelessly to change this hierarchy. Max Roach's group, M'BOOM, is an all-percussion band that boldly attempts to showcase the melodic, harmonic, timbral, contrapuntal, and, of course, rhythmic possibilities of percussion instruments.
M'BOOM begins with the ritualistic thunder of Omar Clay's "Onomatopoeia" which features a variety of mallet instruments, and large tom-toms. The album proceeds along similar paths. Most of this music draws from primal and ethnic music sources although classical percussion instruments such as timpani and orchestra bells are also employed on many tracks. Latin rhythms predominate on "Caravanserai" and African tribal grooves pound throughout tracks such as "Rumble In the Jungle" and "Kujichaglia." M'BOOM is one big spice rack of western and eastern culture shaken into a flavorful and eclectic stew.
