Performers include: The Music Lovers, The Snitches, Pas/Cal, The Blood Group, Pfeuti, Scarboro Aquarium Club, Flare, Always, Cigarbox Planetarium. Pairing up with sister labels Le Grand Magistery Records and Oh! Tonito!, the pop aficionados at Marriage Records offered up this 18-track collection of graceful pop in late 2002. Opening with the demo version of the enchanting "This World vs. the Next World" by the U.K.'s Music Lovers, it's followed by Toronto's Snitches, who offer up the feisty "Shocked" from their 1995 disc A Day at the A. Michigan's Pas/Cal is next with the engaging demo version of "The Cigarette Blouse Rebellion." By this point one thing is clear: Metamorphosis is an international affair of romantic, intellectual pop. The exquisite pop continues with the soft string arrangement of the Blood Group's "Borrowed Tune" from their Volunteers album. Scarboro Aquarium Club offers up the pristine "Little Nikka" from its disc Poisoned, and Always appears on track eight with the intricately subdued yet deliciously catchy "Blackmail." By track ten, it becomes clear that the 18-track disc is actually a showcase of two tracks each by nine of the labels' newest artists. The second half of the disc is highlighted by Pas/Cal's quirky and jovial "The Bronze Beach Boys," Scarboro Aquarium Club's plaintive "The Hemlock Girls," and Cigarbox Planetarium's synthesizer-laden and organ-rich instrumental "Astrocat." Flare offers up the acoustic "So Afraid," featuring L.D. Beghtol's to-die-for vocals and a carnival of offbeat instruments dancing in the background. Pfeuti's jazzy and quirky "Surgeon's Daughter" and the Music Lover's defiantly charismatic "The Train Home" round out the disc. The disc also commemorated the marriage of Le Grand Magistery's owner Matthew Jacobson and Oh! Tonito! owner Leigh Jurecka, who joined forces to form the new Marriage Records.
