Vibraphonist Emil Richards' "Yazz Band" essentially played a rhythmic form of Latin-jazz. Comprised of the leader, pianist Paul Moer, bassist Al McKibbon and three percussionists, the group performs three originals, three jazz standards and a couple of Thelonious Monk tunes; highlights include "Friday the 13th," "Little Niles" and "Half and Half." Unfortunately the original liner notes are duplicated on this CD reissue in microscopic fashion and the exact recording date is not given. ~ Scott Yanow

世界中のパーカッションをはじめ、ヴィブラフォン、ティンパニも自在に操るエミル・リチャーズの60年作がリイシューされました。ラテン・ジャズにプリミティヴなパーカッションを加え、全体をエキゾティック・サウンドで味付けした、摩訶不思議だけど聴きやすい疑似チキ・サウンド作品。マーティン・デニーとカル・ジェイダーによるマンボ作品の中間の音ともいえるかも。セロニアス・モンクの秀逸なカヴァー3曲も魅力。
