過去最長の制作期間を費やしたニュー・アルバムは、総指揮を務めたジョナサン・デイヴィスのキャラが大爆発してる。読経にも似たヘイト・スクリーミングは影を潜めたが、そのぶん濃ゆ～い情念が高らかに歌われるのだ。言葉はますます重く辛辣に、そして幅を広げた唱法は、彼の心に潜む複雑なエモーションを鋭く照らす。ゴシックな肌触りの暗黒ニューウェイヴ・サウンド。そのなかを漂うダークで鮮烈なフレーズの束、ノイズやエフェクトを駆使した音粒。これらもジョナサンが掲げる〈アートとしての挑戦〉なのだろう。いずれにせよ賛否両論が予想される大胆な進化と呼べる。ほかのメンバーもこの全面的な構造改革をバックアップ。磨きをかけたテクニックは演奏力の向上に繋がり、至高のヘヴィー・グルーヴを楽曲に提供する。芸術家・ジョナサンの完璧主義な作風に圧倒される一枚だ。
