Set includes a third disc: a computer CD-ROM of a film, "After Dark". Global Underground's view of music for after the club brings back the days when after-hours didn't have to mean "chill" and generally meant something a little more challenging. Global Underground: Afterhours uses more urban soundscape and druggy paranoia than the slew of chill out compilations released around the same time. That doesn't mean a trip back to the much more experimental-4:00 a.m.-Alex Patterson sets at the Blue Room, but Afterhours does choose Sparklehorse over Groove Armada, and Terranova over Moby. Disc two is fantastic with Andrea Parker's thunk-and-thud mix of Depeche Mode and the excellent choice of the Human League chestnut "Being Boiled" dropped at precisely the right moment. The last three tracks break from the seamless mix, but they're little mind-trips that work on their own. It's a shame the first disc doesn't sort itself out as well, but it lacks disc two's flow and focus. The third disc is for the PC only and contains two short Cabaret Voltaire-style video cut-ups, hardly worth throwing in the drive more than once. Taking chances that don't always work, Afterhours is worth owning for disc two's alternative to the Ibiza chill onslaught. ~ David Jeffries
