If Bobby Vinton is considered a legend by anyone, it's primarily his aging fan base who still worships his recordings during the '60s and early '70s and paid homage at his Blue Velvet theater in Branson, MO. The Legend, an eight-disc box from Collectables, packages a brief hits collection along with seven discs of two-fer reissues of original LPs, all of them originally released between 1964 and 1972 -- from just after his first pop-chart success to the end of his Epic contract. The hits collection is serviceable, including all of his biggest hits: "Blue on Blue," "Blue Velvet," "Sealed With a Kiss," and "Mr. Lonely." The rest of the box shows that Vinton had genuine talents at creating a mood composed of equal parts romance and self-pity. Though his '70s recordings display an artist struggling to cope with the new generation of pop song, his earlier recordings are a fine blend of material -- a few solid James Bond themes, several adult-pop standards ("P.S. I Love You," "It's the Talk of the Town"), and Vinton's true latter-day calling: covers of melancholy country-pop nuggets from the '60s like "Night Life," "Sentimental Me," "All Alone Am I," and "Have You Ever Been Lonely (Have You Ever Been Blue?)." Since each of these discs are also available separately, listeners who gravitate to any of his original records are advised to seek out those single discs instead of this immense set. ~ John Bush
