Though Shriekback was formed by refugees from the Gang of Four (bassist Dave Allen) and XTC (keyboardist Barry Andrews), they never had much in common with either of those bands. Instead, Allen, Andrews, and singer Carl Marsh created a muscular, aggressive, yet melodically inviting and lyrically intriguing form of dance music that's never quite been duplicated. 1990's THE DANCING YEARS is an oddball compilation of Shriekback singles like "My Spine is the Bass Line," odd mixes like an extended reworking of their career highpoint "Nemesis," single versions, and a generous helping of live recordings. Most dance bands can't cut it live, but Shriekback's post-punk background and refreshing reliance on guitar, bass, and live drums alongside synths and sequencers gave them a walloping, thunderous live sound. This is as good as dance music got in the '80s.
