When the beats kick in on the opening track "Feel the Sunshine," it seems like 1995's SO FAR is going to sound like Bjork's release of the same year, POST. Deborah Anderson's vocals even sound Icelandic. However, where Bjork adapts her style to different musical forms, Alex Reece believes in bending the forms themselves. Recording for a DJ label owned Goldie, Reece recorded the stunning single "Pulp Fiction," which appears here in an altered version, "Pulp Friction." A deep rumble of bass guitar and a morass of muted beats, this track alone would be reason enough to pay attention to Reece. But there is more going on with SO FAR.
The album moves effortlessly between the kinds of smooth near-jazz dance tracks that Everything But the Girl fans would appreciate ("Jazz Master" and "Candles") and the wicked beat structures the hard-core drum & bass fans look for (laid-back ravers like "Acid Lab" and "Ibiza"). Other standouts include the atmospherically spooky backwards-effects of "Intro One" and the deceptively straightforward "Out of Time," featuring some sneaky bridges. This album is an excellent intro to the further reaches of the techno scene.
