1995's BLESSED is a typically excellent Beenie Man release, one of the few released by a major US company instead of one of the many tiny reggae specialist labels. Happily, Beenie Man makes no particular moves towards mainstream or crossover acceptance; BLESSED is every bit as uncompromising as DEFEND IT or any of his other early albums.
As always, his toasting is complex, eloquent, and stunningly blunt. (See "Acid Attack" or "Tear off Mi Garment" for details.) Unlike some dancehall reggae, which seems somewhat thin and weedy-sounding in comparison to the work of artists such as Lee Perry or the Mad Professor, Beenie Man's mostly electronic rhythms don't skimp on either the bass or the atmospherics.
