Several years before Frank Ifield became an international star he made a number of recordings in Australia that saw very limited circulation. Sings Country & Classics collects 30 of these Australian sides from 1955-1959 and covers a broad range of styles. Ifield is an expert yodeler but his talent as such is heard extensively only on a cover of Yodeling Slim Clark's "Yodelling Mad," the earliest recording here. "I've Got a Feeling" is a country boogie, "Don't Do That" is an intriguing acoustic rockabilly cut, and "Chip off the Old Block" combines the two. "Kaw Liga" is presented in an early version that lacks the pop glass of his later recording, and "Serves You Right" is an original composition that borrows heavily from Hank Snow's "Would You Mind." The most interesting thing about the anthology is the number of pop standards Ifield performs and the near-ubiquitous pop vocal chorus that accompanies him, both of which contradict the claim that Ifield was a pure country singer in his early years. Ifield is a confident vocalist without the heavy Australian accent some of his Australian contemporaries have, and it is easy to see why he was able to find an international audience. ~ Greg Adams
