Since spinning out from jungle renegade Sound of the Underground in the mid-'90s, Botchit and Scarper has practically carved out the new-school niche single. This fifth showcase finds itself compiled by label veteran Atomic Hooligan (aka DJ Matt Welch), who aspires to reflect a snapshot of the breakbeat dancefloor at the time of his selection -- covering all of the bases the subgenre has to offer. From the drum'n'bass-inspired barks of breakstep to the more house-orientated vocal material and darker techno connotations, this is an album that represents the movement with aplomb. As contributions from tastemakers Si Begg, Chris Carter, and Aquasky's Masterblaster side project ensure, this will prove another popular choice for those fond of breaks but not inclined to pick up the vinyl. The closing "Set Levels" from T.Power proves the most distinctive track here, with Aurora Borealis humanizing Royale's electronic ripples with a solemn vocal. ~ Kingsley Marshall|
