While some of the entries in the ongoing Capitol Records Classic Masters series simply do not get the track listing right, the Pat Benatar version includes nearly all of the expected hits. Benatar was one of the leading female rockers of the early-to mid-'80s (post-Debbie Harry, pre-Madonna), and her Classic Masters entry wisely focuses primarily on this aforementioned 'golden' period. Tops here include the early MTV standard "Love Is a Battlefield" (yes, the one whose video included an inadvertently hilarious 'dance off' in the middle), as well as the power ballad "We Belong," plus the hard rockers "You Better Run," "Hit Me With Your Best Shot," and "Invincible," the latter serving as the theme song to one of the worst '80s era teen movie dramas, The Legend of Billie Jean. By excluding such additional Benatar classics as "Precious Time," "Fire and Ice," and "Shadows of the Night," it's obvious what the aim is of the folks at Capitol -- hoping that the purchaser of Classic Masters will then go back and buy other Benatar titles. And because of that, Best Shots remains the best assembled Benatar hits package. ~ Greg Prato
