課外活動であるクイーンズ・オブ・ザ・ストーン・エイジの最新アルバム『Songs For The Deaf』では、本職（?）のドラマーとしても絶好調、デイヴ・グロールが率いるフー・ファイターズの新作。ギター・ロックにこだわり続けて早云年、同じフォーマットをこれだけ新鮮に響かせることのできるバンドもそうはいない。よりヘヴィーに、よりポップに（＝より多くの人に伝わるように）、そしてなにより、自分たちの満足を追究してきた結果の確信に満ちたサウンドは圧巻の説得力。完成直前のアルバムを一旦ボツにして一気に作り上げたらしく、激情を素直に炸裂させたアグレッシヴでザラついたサウンドがそんなポップさと共存するバランスも素晴らしい。悲嘆や怒りや諦念をポジティヴに反転させるためのロックに、絶対の信頼を置いているがゆえの清々しいまでのたくましさ。〈グランジ〉もここまで来ました。
