Along with Bernard Herrmann and Nina Rota, Ennio Morricone was one of the most significant and innovative composers of film music in the 20th Century. His distinctive arrangements, particularly those in his famous scores for Sergio Leone's "spaghetti Westerns," including church organ, unconventional vocals, electric guitar, Jew's harp, and Mariachi-style brass, also make his film scores among the most instantly recognizable. AT THE MOVIES is a strong, pared-down 18-track sampler of the artist's groundbreaking work.
AT THE MOVIES focuses primarily on Morricone's Western scores, culling selections from A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS, A FEW DOLLARS MORE, and ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST. In the '70s and '80s Morricone moved away from Westerns to write for films like Aleksandar Petrovic's THE MASTER AND MARGARITA (from which the opulent, romantic piece "The Encounter" is excerpted) and SECRETS OF THE SAHARA (from which two lilting, atmospheric cues are included). These are sweeping orchestral pieces that contrast the eerie, minimal, often experimental Western scores to give a full overview of the man's range and vision.
