June Tabor's 12th album, 1997's ALEYN, is a bit of a surprise for longtime Tabor fans. Unlike most of her previous albums, which featured minimal instrumentation within the traditional British folk idiom, ALEYN's musician credits include folks playing diatonic and piano accordions, violin, viola, clarinet, saxophones and double bass. (In that respect, ALEYN foreshadows 2000's even more musically complex and adventurous A QUIET EYE, on which Tabor is backed by the 13-piece Creative Jazz Orchestra.) The varied songs are well supported by the multi-dimensional arrangements, but Tabor's stunningly expressive voice remains at the forefront throughout the album. Highlights include a surprisingly effective version of Richard Thompson's "The Great Valerio"--Tabor cuts right to the emotional truth of the rather opaque lyrics--and a cutting version of Ralph McTell's broadside "Bentley and Craig," about the same crime that inspired Elvis Costello's "Let Him Dangle" and the film LET HIM HAVE IT. The handful of traditional ballads, some sung unaccompanied, are equally engrossing.
