Arguably the finest post-Denny British folk singer, Tabor was never content to remain within that tradition's rigid confines. As her subsequent recordings would prove, she was equally at home with jazz standards, rock/pop and artsong. AQABA provides perhaps the most comprehensive overview of Tabor's gifts. She tackles unaccompanied traditional material like "Bogie's Bonnie Belle" with aplomb one moment and redefines the then-unknown Natalie Merchant's "Verdi Cries" the next. The stoic, unflappable quality of Tabor's style is like the calm in the eye of the storm, as she navigates subtle but effective emotional dynamics with no undue fanfare. The spare, impressionistic arrangements set her rich voice in stark relief, with low-key violin (Fairport's Ric Sanders) and synthesizer providing cool, dreamy textures.
