Taken from the same session as his other Who's Who CD All American Hero, this album features Wynton Marsalis at the beginning of his career; only a date with Art Blakey's big band pre-dates the recording. Although released under Marsalis' name, this is really a set by Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. The already-brilliant trumpeter (seven days shy of his 19th birthday) fits in well with the all-star group (which also includes altoist Bobby Watson, Billy Pierce on tenor, pianist James Williams, bassist Charles Fambrough, and the drummer-leader); Wynton's father Ellis makes a guest appearance playing piano on "Jody." Although the packaging of the hard bop set by Who's Who has some misspellings and incomplete personnel, the music is quite rewarding. Marsalis had not yet been heavily influenced by Miles Davis (he was in his brief Freddie Hubbard phase) at this point. A rare early look at the influential trumpeter as a teenager. ~ Scott Yanow
