Supergrass: Gaz Coombes, Mick Quinn, Danny Goffey, Rob Coombes.
Recorded at Helioscentric Studio, Sussex, England and Rockfield Studios, Monmouth, Wales in 2002.
Supergrass exploded onto the already crowded British scene while making a modest splash stateside with 1995's I SHOULD COCO, featuring brash three-minute Buzzcocks-like songs fraught with punky energy and abundant with classic rock & roll hooks. With the following two albums released over the next five years, the Londoners built upon that sound, reinventing it into a more complex, slightly psychedelic, slightly more soulful sound.
With their fourth album, LIFE ON OTHER PLANETS, Supergrass seems to mix in all these elements and simultaneously throw them out the window. Like Blur or Radiohead, part of Supergrass's charm is the lack of a specific, pigeonholed sound, eschewed in favor of an ever-changing musical landscape. Here the foursome announce their presence with a '70s glam beat and the invitation "time waits for no one/so why don't we get it on." And get it on they do; one thread running through their music is the distinct and obvious fun they have composing and performing. They come off like the ultimate pub band playing well past last call and showing no signs of stopping, slipping from one musical world to the next, from the Village Green-era Kinks on "Evening Of The Day" to the torch song "Run."
