Savath & Savalas: Guillermo Scott Herren.
Whilst busying himself with his own Eastern Developments label, this short, five-track EP from electro-jazz genius Scott Herren (a.k.a. Prefuse 73, Delarosa + Asora) spends less time clicking and bleeping than he did on his last record, and sees him seeking out a much bigger sonic space for his tightly wound instrumentation.
Recording as Savath and Savalas, Herren's Rolls and Waves EP delves quite a bit further into jazzy territory than his previous outing, 1999's Folk Songs For Trains, Trees and Honey, and tracks such as "Folk Song for Cello" seem to border on new age experimentalism. Herren has cast off his usual post-rockisms, giving way to a fuller, more organic sound that also includes light string arrangements and vocal samples. And further in keeping with the Hefty aesthetic, he manages to meet labelmates Telefon Tel Aviv and Slicker half way as he similarly contorts his traditional jazz sounds into an intricate maze of beats and rhythms. Although he enlists the assistance of a few extra players on the disc's lead-off track, it's key to note that most of Rolls and Waves is performed by Herren alone. More than simply a teaser, this EP presents new listeners with yet another side of this brilliant producer's talents. An incredible record from end to end, Rolls and Waves' only flaw is that it is too short. ~ Ken Taylor
